The 40th birthday and 40 miles

"On May 10, 2009 I turned 40 years old. I had planned to run a marathon to celebrate, but I guess due to Mother's Day the only ones scheduled were in Canada and it really didn't make sense to me to spend all that money to fly up there and run for 4 hours and then fly back.  During the months leading up to my birthday there was a lot of news about the government having to bail out these companies that were "too big too fail."  That seemed really goofy to me that we would give billions of dollars to these companies when there were people right here in my community that were struggling to make ends meet.  So I decided that instead of running a marathon, I'd set a goal of running as far as I could in 8 hours and hopefully cover 40 miles.  I got my friends involved, asking them to pledge a small amount of money for every mile I was able to finish, which we would in turn donate to a local charity called GRACE that provided assistance to single parent families.  God took over from there. People from New York to San Francisco, many of whom I didn't even know, pledged money.  When it was all said and done, we were able to raise over $7,000 and I covered 41.73 miles.  Needless to say, that was the best birthday I have ever had." - Steve Isbell
